About 5,000 people gathered at the Capitol on Saturday to protest President Trump and the Texas Legislature's plan to redraw the state's congressional districts to give Republicans more seats in the U.
As Texas hurtles toward a flashpoint on a GOP effort to redraw congressional districts, California Democrats are answering with a plan of their own.
There is no guarantee Democrats can prevent the Republican-powered redistricting, just as Democrats on Capitol Hill have not been able to stop Trump’s moves. But it’s a notable turn for a party that, by its own leaders’ admissions, has honored conventional rules and bypassed bare-knuckled tactics.
It’s not just Donald Trump’s mantra anymore. As the Republican president pushes states to redraw their congressional districts to the GOP’s advantage, Democrats have shown they are willing to go beyond words of outrage and use whatever power they do have to win.
The event was part of a national day of action, "Fight the Trump Takover," in protest of the redrawing of congressional maps in Texas. Protestors gathered on the Union and Eastmoreland overpasses and held signs and banners with statements such as "Resist" and "Stop Trump Save Democracy."
