Java used to be deeply embedded in OS X, but in recent versions of the OS it's an optional install. Here is how to check to see if it is installed, and how to disable or remove it.

Check the Enabled option to permit the latest Java Runtime version. Click on OK button to apply the setting changes. Click OK in Java Control Panel to confirm the changes.

Each version will be associated with a number, starting with 0. If you want to switch to Java 18, locate and type the associated number for Java 18 and hit Enter on your keyboard.
