A battle over jurisdictional authority continued to heat up Wednesday, as federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault insisted an element of Alberta's pushback to Ottawa's oil and gas cap could land companies in hot water.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government is looking to challenge the proposed federal greenhouse gas emissions cap, including by passing legislation to give the province exclusive authority over emissions data and banning federal employees from designated oil and gas sites.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said his government has no plans to challenge Alberta’s use of the sovereignty act, arguing it has little impact on the Liberals’ proposed clean electricity regulations.
