Antitrust enforcers with the Federal Trade Commission have opened a wide-ranging investigation into Microsoft’s business practices, starting off a big legal project that an incoming Trump administration must take up or abandon.

But in an email to the FTC inspector general, sent Tuesday and posted publicly on LinkedIn, Microsoft’s deputy general counsel Rima Alaily said that Microsoft has not received a formal legal process from the FTC and that the company learned of the information request from the Bloomberg article.

Microsoft is confronting a federal investigation that could reshape the technology industry's competitive landscape, with regulators examining the company's potentially anticompetitive practices in cloud computing and artificial intelligence markets.
