Here are the worst times to drive and fly in Southern California during the Thanksgiving travel rush this year — from traffic jams along the 5 Freeway to the packed terminals of LAX.

This Thanksgiving week could see record travel numbers according to federal leaders. The Transportation Department says it's coordinating with federal agencies and airlines to try to ensure the holiday season goes smoothly despite the uptick in travelers.

The vast majority of travelers, roughly 5.7 million, are expected to reach their destination by car, while 676,000 are expected to fly and 182,000 are expected to use other means, such as bus, train or cruise ship.

“Wednesday is already slated to be the busiest travel day of the week, and if weather delays travel plans, we can expect the day before Thanksgiving to be even busier on roads,” Treanor said.

Thanksgiving will kick off a stretch of clear and warm weather across Southern California, though winds will also slightly increase.

It will bring less than an inch of rain, somewhere between 0.1 to 0.5 inches everywhere except Southern California's mountain communities. It isn't expected to significantly affect life leading up to Thanksgiving,
